The initial taste is one of caramel before the hop bitterness and the malt come to the fore. The finish gives a hint of banana as well as citrus.
The launch of Straffe Hendrik – still the brewery’s flagship beer – heralded the era of strong degustation beers at De Halve Maan.
Its brewer is the oldest in Bruges, based in its historic city centre, and also well known for its Brugse Zot Blonde and Donker (dark). De Halve Maan has been brewing for five centuries.

The taste and fragrance of the beer are very complex and evolve through the years. The tannin from the barrels blends exquisitely with the special malts in the beer. The combination of the spiciness and bitterness of the Quadrupel with the subtle taste of wine and wood from the barrels is inimitable. Liquorice and dark fruits like raisins, prunes and figs can also be discovered. With age the beer will develop a hint of port as well.
