Denne grand cru indeholder meget mere modnet ale (67%) end den almindelige Rodenbach-øl (25%), som giver den en mørkere farve og en mere kompleks og udtalt smag. Fordi den gamle ale er modnet i 2 år i egetræskåle, har smagen af ??denne øl næsten tendens til den af ??en vin. Ølguru Michael Jackson kaldte det "The Burgundy of Belgium". Det har et alkoholindhold på 6,0%.

Bryggeri Rodenbach i Roeselare, i det vestlige Belgien er nok den mest kendte brygger af denne særlige ølstil. Flamsk rød, eller Flanders rød ale er en sur øl med en mørk rødlig farve, der kan sammenlignes med ingen anden øl. Bryggeriet blev grundlagt i 1821 af tre brødre og udviklede denne meget specielle øl stil, hvorved øl modner i unikke egnede fade (kaldet 'foeders'), før de blandes og bringes på markedet. Bryggeriet har i øjeblikket ikke mindre end 294 sådanne fade, nogle af dem mere 150 år gamle.

Den traditionelle Rodenbach-øl består hovedsagelig af ung øl og er en ægte tørstlækning for hver dag. Siden et par år har bryggeriet imidlertid begyndt at fokusere mere på de ældre og modne øl. Rodenbach Vintage er for eksempel en toårig sur ale, der vælges en gang om året fra en bestemt beholder med den bedste smag. Eller Caractere Rouge er toårig sur øle, som rød frugt er blevet tilsat i seks måneder. Begge disse øl er ret sjældne, fordi de kun produceres i begrænsede mængder.

Grand Cru by Rodenbach has on average been left for much longer in the oak casks (“foeders”) of the Roeselare “beer cathedral”, which results in a more pronounced version of the “Flanders Red-Brown Beer” style. Rodenbach Grand Cru consists of 1/3 young beer and 2/3 beer matured two years in oak. The result is a complex beer with a great deal of wood and esters, vinous and with a very long aftertaste, just like a Grand Cru wine.
