Il colore è rossastro tendente al marrone. Il liquido una volta versato nel bicchiere si lascia attraversare dallo sguardo offrendosi pulito e cristallino. Il cappello di schiuma è sottile ma compatto. Le sensazioni olfattive hanno riflessi chiaramente vinosi: aceto di vino, ciliegia rossa dolce e matura, frutta secca, scorza d'agrumi, vaniglia e caramello.
Al palato è dolce e, allo stesso tempo, aspra. La carbonica marcatamente presente ed avvertibile, ne amplifica il profilo agrodolce e ne esalta il finale rendendo questa birra, nonostante l'ostica complessità ostentata nell'approccio olfattivo, assolutamente piacevole e beverina. Per chi ama l'acidità, non per tutti (di quelle amore oppure odio al primo sorso per intenderci).
Si utilizza una combinazione di malti e luppoli molto particolari e ci si affida ad una fermentazione "mista" (lieviti ad alta fermentazione e fermenti lattici) per ottenere questo risultato così peculiare. Di fondamentale importanza, poi, la maturazione che avviene, rispettando un'antica tradizione, in grandi tini di quercia, prolungandosi per ben 18 mesi. Determinante, infine, il sapiente assemblaggio tra le diverse botti. Si tratta di uno stile che si colloca al confine stesso tra birra e vino. E' sufficiente leggere le note di degustazione per rendersi subito ed inequivocabilmente conto.

Como a cerveja envelhecida amadureceu durante 2 anos em barricas de carvalho, o sabor desta cerveja quase tende ao de um vinho. O guru da cerveja Michael Jackson chamou-o de “A Borgonha da Bélgica”. Tem um teor de álcool de 6,0%.
A cervejaria Rodenbach em Roeselare, no oeste da Bélgica, é provavelmente a cervejaria mais conhecida deste estilo especial de cerveja. Vermelho flamengo, ou Flanders red ale é uma cerveja amarga com uma cor avermelhada escura que não pode ser comparada com nenhuma outra cerveja. A cervejaria foi fundada em 1821 por três irmãos e desenvolveu este estilo de cerveja muito particular, pelo qual a cerveja amadurece em barricas de carvalho únicas (chamadas “foeders”) antes de serem misturadas e trazidas no mercado. Atualmente, a cervejaria tem mais de 294 barris, alguns deles com mais de 150 anos.
A cerveja tradicional de Rodenbach consiste principalmente na cerveja jovem e é um verdadeiro extintor da sede de todos os dias. Desde há alguns anos, a cervejaria começou a concentrar-se mais nas cervejas mais antigas e maduras. O Vintage Rodenbach, por exemplo, é uma cerveja amarga de dois anos, selecionada uma vez por ano de um barril particular com o melhor sabor. Ou Caractere Rouge é a cerveja amarga de dois anos de idade, à qual foram adicionados frutos vermelhos durante seis meses. Ambas as cervejas são bastante raras, porque só são produzidas em quantidades limitadas.
