Brouwerij Rodenbach

Rodenbach Grand Cru is a definitive Flanders Red Ale, distinguished by its intensive two-year maturation in oak foeders. This aging process imparts a profound vinous character, reminiscent of a fine red Burgundy. The profile is a sophisticated tapestry of sharp lactic acidity and complex esters, bursting with sensory notes of black cherry, red currant, and dried plum. A subtle touch of balsamic-like acetic acid balances the soft, toasty malt backbone. Blending mature and young beer creates a multifaceted experience where wood-derived tannins meet a bright, puckering finish, making it a masterpiece of Belgian brewing tradition and sensory complexity.

Appearance. Deep burgundy to reddish-brown in color with good clarity. Displays a thin, pale tan head with moderate retention and light lacing.

Aroma. High intensity fruity-sour profile featuring sharp notes of black cherries, red currants, and plums. Moderate acidic aroma with a balanced, low acetic character. Supporting toasty malt is present alongside low vanilla and oaky phenols. No hop aroma.

Taste. Complex interplay of intense fruit flavors including black cherry and grape with a sharp, moderate to high sourness. Moderate toasty malt provides a structural backbone that recedes as the acidic bite takes hold. Restrained bitterness is supplanted by oak tannins and acidity. The finish is long, dry, and vinous with a lingering tartness.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with a prickly acidity that feels deceptively light and crisp on the palate. Low to moderate carbonation. Noticeable but pleasant astringency from oak tannins, with very low alcohol warmth.

Il cappello di schiuma è sottile ma compatto. Le sensazioni olfattive hanno riflessi chiaramente vinosi: aceto di vino, ciliegia rossa dolce e matura, frutta secca, scorza d'agrumi, vaniglia e caramello.
Al palato è dolce e, allo stesso tempo, aspra. La carbonica marcatamente presente ed avvertibile, ne amplifica il profilo agrodolce e ne esalta il finale rendendo questa birra, nonostante l'ostica complessità ostentata nell'approccio olfattivo, assolutamente piacevole e beverina. Per chi ama l'acidità, non per tutti (di quelle amore oppure odio al primo sorso per intenderci).
Si utilizza una combinazione di malti e luppoli molto particolari e ci si affida ad una fermentazione "mista" (lieviti ad alta fermentazione e fermenti lattici) per ottenere questo risultato così peculiare. Di fondamentale importanza, poi, la maturazione che avviene, rispettando un'antica tradizione, in grandi tini di quercia, prolungandosi per ben 18 mesi. Determinante, infine, il sapiente assemblaggio tra le diverse botti. Si tratta di uno stile che si colloca al confine stesso tra birra e vino. E' sufficiente leggere le note di degustazione per rendersi subito ed inequivocabilmente conto.

En boca muestra sabor a cerezas, uvas, vainilla y deja notar en el sabor su maduración en madera. Es fina y apenas notarás el rastro de la malta en ella. Es una de las cervezas más populares en el estilo Flanders Red Ale. Madura en barricas de roble durante 2 años. Su elaboración, finalmente, está formada por dos tercios de cerveza madura y 1 tercio de cerveza joven.

Se trata de una cerveza roja belga envejecida, “madurada tranquilamente en barricas de roble durante dos años”, según la etiqueta. Tiene un aroma extremadamente penetrante de rica fruta de uva, con notas ácidas, muy parecido a un vino tinto ligeramente agrio o posiblemente a una gueuze. En boca es ligeramente dulce, extremadamente ácido y afrutado, con uvas e incluso cerezas perceptibles, y muy vivo. A pesar de la dulzura no es para nada empalagosa, incluso fina, con poco o ningún rastro de malta. El final es agudo y afrutado.
