Sour Ale 7 º
De Ranke Kriek is a sophisticated Wild Specialty Beer that showcases a masterfully balanced blend of old Flemish ale and lambic. The sensory profile is defined by the addition of 25 kilos of whole sour cherries per hectoliter, yielding an intense, unsweetened fruit character. Aromatically, it leads with a bright, acidic cherry punch followed by complex wild fermentation notes of leather, damp earth, and horse blanket. The palate is sharply tart yet structural, where the deep red fruit acidity meets subtle toasted malt and a hint of oak-like tannin. It finishes bone-dry and effervescent, emphasizing the authentic, puckering nature of the fruit.
Appearance. Pours a deep, brilliant ruby-red to burgundy with a frothy, pink-tinted head that shows moderate retention and leaves light lacing. Clarity is generally good, though a slight haze may be present from the mixed fermentation.
Aroma. High intensity aromatics of sharp, acidic sour cherries and cherry pits. Underlying this is a complex funk featuring leathery Brettanomyces, hay, and a light acetic sharpness. Very low malt notes of toasted bread or light caramel are buried beneath the fruit and fermentation character.
Taste. Initial impression is a bracing, clean acidity dominated by authentic sour cherries. The middle palate reveals complex layers of funk, earthy wood, and a touch of dark fruit esters like plum. Hop bitterness is very low, as the balance is driven by lactic sourness and fruit tannins. The finish is exceptionally dry, crisp, and lingering with a tart cherry aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a sharp, puckering acidity that creates a mouth-watering sensation. Carbonation is high and prickly, enhancing the perceived dryness. A slight tannic astringency from the cherry skins provides structure without being harsh.

Description

Kriek De Ranke is a 7% vol. Alc. Kriek that’s unique because the composition is based on two different styles of sour ales. Being the red-brown style from the Roeselare/ Kortrijk/ Oudenaarde-region and the Lambic style from the Pajottenland-region, close to Brussels. They produce and acidify the red-brown ale themselves, after which they add 25% sour cherries. These cherries stay in the ale for 6 months. Once fermented, the cherries come out and they add Lambic from Brewery Girardin. After this the ale matures for a while before being ready to drink. It’s an explicit thirst quencher, that contains nearly no sugar.
