“CHOUFFE wil niks zeggen!”
Tijdens een lunchpauze zei een van de collega’s met z’n mond vol tegen Chris: “Je zou je bier Oempf moeten noemen!” “Oempf?” reageerde Chris. De collega slikte z’n hap door en sprak voor het eerst het woord “Chouffe” uit. Het betekende helemaal niets, maar na een paar nachtjes slapen en denken over dat woord was hij ervoor gewonnen. Zijn medestichter reageerde aanvankelijk precies zoals hij: “Chouffe wil niks zeggen!” Maar ook hij broedde een paar nachten op het idee en draaide bij.
Zo maakten ze het woord-dat-niks-betekent wereldkundig.

Waarom een kabouter?
«GEEN DIKKE PATER OP ONZE FLESSEN!”»
Destijds (en nu soms nog) werden bieren met karakter gekoppeld aan het beeld van een abdij, van een welgedane pater, … ook als de drank hoegenaamd niets met een kloostertraditie te maken had. De stichters van de brouwerij van Achouffe wilden iets anders, iets sympathiekers.
EEN GELUK BIJ EEN ONGELUK
Na een tornado die op maandag 20 september 1982 heel wat schade aanrichtte in het Ardeense dorpje Léglise, werd een solidariteitsavond georganiseerd om geld in te zamelen voor hulp aan de getroffenen. Chris zag op televisie de veiling van schilderijen van plaatselijke kunstenaars en zijn oog viel op een aquarel van een kabouter die doorheen opgeschoten planten naar een boerderij aan het turen is.
“EEN KABOUTER OP HET ETIKET, DA’S PAS EEN IDEE!”
En zo verscheen de eerste tekening van kabouter Marcel in april 1983.

The story begins in the late 1970s, in the middle of the Vallée des Fées (the Valley of the Fairies), when two brothers-in-law, Pierre Gobron and Chris Bauweraerts decided to create their own beer in the garage belonging to Chrisâ mother-in-law. With the little money they had at the time, they began what the breweryâs fans now call the âChouffe Storyâ. The 1st brew of 49 litres was produced on 27 August 1982.
In 1992, 10 years later, production rose from 3,400 hectolitres to 5,000 hectolitres per year. The brewery had invested in a new brewing house so that they could increase each brew from 22 hectolitres to 70 hectolitres. At the time, the Achouffe Brewery only produced large, 75cl bottles and âsmallâ 20L barrels of La Chouffe and Mc Chouffe. The 33cl bottles only appeared in May 2009.
As the brewery grew, so did its family of gnomes. Marcel (La Chouffe) and Malcolm (Mc Chouffe) found themselves joined by new companions including Matthew (Houblon Chouffe) and now Micheline (Cherry Chouffe)! Each gnome represents one of the beers in the range, and each has their own story and characteristics.

Brasserie d'AchouffeTowards the end of the 1970s, Pierre Gobron and Christian Bauweraerts (two brother-in-laws) decided to create their own beer in their own brewery. With initially only a small amount of money available to them (200.000Bfr, less than 5.000€), they started out on what the fans of the brewery call the ‘Chouffe story’. At the beginning its founders thought of it as a hobby, but the brewery developed at such a rate that, one by one, they decided to devote themselves to the adventure full-time. The first ‘brassin’ (brewing mix) of LA CHOUFFE (49 litres) was finished on 27th August 1982. The elves of Achouffe were impatient to discover new countries, and their Dutch cousins were the first to give them a warm welcome. Even today, the Netherlands is the major destination of Achouffe Beers outside Belgium. Nowadays, more than 20 countries worldwide are supplied with our ‘nectar’ from the Ardennes forests. “CHOUFFE wil niks zeggen!”
Tijdens een lunchpauze zei een van de collega’s met z’n mond vol tegen Chris: “Je zou je bier Oempf moeten noemen!” “Oempf?” reageerde Chris. De collega slikte z’n hap door en sprak voor het eerst het woord “Chouffe” uit. Het betekende helemaal niets, maar na een paar nachtjes slapen en denken over dat woord was hij ervoor gewonnen. Zijn medestichter reageerde aanvankelijk precies zoals hij: “Chouffe wil niks zeggen!” Maar ook hij broedde een paar nachten op het idee en draaide bij.
Zo maakten ze het woord-dat-niks-betekent wereldkundig.

Waarom een kabouter?
«GEEN DIKKE PATER OP ONZE FLESSEN!”»
Destijds (en nu soms nog) werden bieren met karakter gekoppeld aan het beeld van een abdij, van een welgedane pater, … ook als de drank hoegenaamd niets met een kloostertraditie te maken had. De stichters van de brouwerij van Achouffe wilden iets anders, iets sympathiekers.
EEN GELUK BIJ EEN ONGELUK
Na een tornado die op maandag 20 september 1982 heel wat schade aanrichtte in het Ardeense dorpje Léglise, werd een solidariteitsavond georganiseerd om geld in te zamelen voor hulp aan de getroffenen. Chris zag op televisie de veiling van schilderijen van plaatselijke kunstenaars en zijn oog viel op een aquarel van een kabouter die doorheen opgeschoten planten naar een boerderij aan het turen is.
“EEN KABOUTER OP HET ETIKET, DA’S PAS EEN IDEE!”
En zo verscheen de eerste tekening van kabouter Marcel in april 1983.
