Zlatý Westmalle Extra se vařil pouze dvakrát ročně, především pro opatství. Po desetiletích úvah se Bratři z Westmalle Abbey rozhodli poprvé komerčně vydat Westmalle Extra. Westmalle Extra je stolní pivo podávané mnichům a jejich hostům a vaří se z vody, ječného sladu a chmelových šišek. Pro toto pivo se také používají kvasinky Westmalle Dubbel a Tripel. Westmalle Extra je opět svrchně kvašený, ale je podstatně lehčí, se 4,8 % alkoholu na objem, než jeho silnější bratr. Má charakteristické aroma Westmalle s chmelem v závěru. Je to skutečný prostředek na uhašení žízně.
The golden blonde Westmalle Extra was only brewed twice a year, primarily for use within the abbey. After decades of consideration the Brethren at Westmalle Abbey have decided to release Westmalle Extra commercially for the first time. Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.

A top fermented 4.8% golden ale designed to be thirst-quenching, full of fruity aromas, and full bodied. Brewed only with whole cone noble hops and, unlike the Tripel and Dubbel, without any brewing sugar additions. Extra is bottled unpasteurised, and is refermented in the bottle too, to preserve the richness of all its component parts, and allow some evolution in the bottle. This beer was previously exclusively for the monks, with lucky guests of the abbey occasionally being offered a glass, or on occasion small amounts were released for local sale. As with many other extremely rare, on site only beers, sporadic bottles have found their way outwith the abbey walls to be unscrupulously flipped in beer trades. It’s such a bizarre juxtaposition that an unadorned beer brewed for people living the most simple of lifestyles is coveted and chased after.

Czy wiesz, że Extra to jedno z najstarszych piw Westmalle? Co więcej, jest to część długiej tradycji, równie starej jak sam browar. Cofnijmy się w czasie do 1836 roku. Wtedy to trapiści z Westmalle postanowili uwarzyć własne piwo.
Potrzebowali własnego lokalnego napoju do spożywania podczas posiłków. W naszej części świata logiczne było, że to będzie piwo. Wszystko to w zgodzie z regułą monastyczną św. Benedykta, która służy jako naczelna zasada trapistów.
PIWO MNICHÓW OD 1836 ROKU. INSPIRUJĄCA HISTORIA WESTMALLE EXTRA
Tak więc mnisi zaczęli warzyć piwo, co zaowocowało najpierw ciemnym piwem stołowym. Z pism wiemy, że jakiś czas później pojawiło się też piwo pszeniczne. Na początku XX wieku znowu mówiło się o jasnym piwie „Extra Gersten” (exta jęczmień): poprzedniku Extra. Przez cały ten czas lżejszy wariant był niezmiennie na własnym stole mnichów. Byli szczęśliwi mogąc zaoferować swoje Dubbel i Tripel światu zewnętrznemu, ale w obrębie murów opactwa wybrali surową jakość, która lepiej pasowała do ich stylu życia.
