Это не крепкое, столовое пиво, которое подают монахам и их гостям. До недавнего времени Вестмалле Траппист Экстра не экспортировалось в другие страны. Для его производства используются те же дрожжи Westmalle, что для сортов Dubbel и Tripel. Westmalle Extra также представляет собой пиво верхового брожения, но он значительно легче (4,8%) по крепости, чем его собратья и производится, в отличие от них, без добавления сахара. Этот светлый эль обладает достаточно простым для траппистского эля вкусом, очень лёгким телом. Он прекрасно освежает, подходит для употребления в любое время дня. Увлекательная история рождения Westmalle Trappist Extra
В апреле 1836 года был основан монастырь аббатства траппистов — Westmalle. В том же 1836 году аббатом Мартинусом Домом при монастыре была построена небольшая пивоварня и уже в декабре монахи трапезничали с пивом. Долгие годы пивоварня использовалась только для нужд монастыря. Первая продажа пива за пределы монастыря состоялась в 1856 году. Пиво стало очень популярным, поэтому монахи расширили пивоварню, дважды перестроив ее — в 1865 и 1897 годах.
В 1921 году монахи монастыря Вестмалле приняли решение продавать свое пиво через пивных трейдеров. Продажи стремительно росли, и в начале 30-х годов был введен в эксплуатацию новый пивной зал. Значительная модернизация производства неоднократно производилась в последующие десятилетия. Была построена собственная водоочистная станция. В 1991 году пивоваренный зал был компьютеризирован, что значительно улучшило качество пива, а в 2000 году запустили в эксплуатацию новые подвалы, где созданы идеальные условия для вторичного брожения пива. Более чем за 170 лет существования, пивоварня использует только экологически чистые компоненты в производстве пива: вода, солод, хмель, сахар и дрожжи. И все эти годы траппистское пиво только улучшает свое и без того высокое качество.
