Verhaeghe Vichtenaar is a quintessential Flanders Red Ale, aged for at least eight months in oak foeders to achieve a refreshing, vinous complexity. It presents a deep reddish-brown hue with a lively, fine-bubbled head. The nose is dominated by a bright, fresh apple acidity and nuanced hints of Madeira and vanilla derived from the wood. On the palate, toasty reddish malts provide a sturdy base for layers of red currant and stone fruit, balanced by a sharp yet approachable lactic tartness. Subtle spicy hops provide a structured finish, while the oak aging lends a dry, tannic closure reminiscent of a fine vintage red wine.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown to burgundy color (10–17 SRM). Good clarity with a fine, lively carbonation. Topped by a pale tan, well-formed head with moderate retention.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity. Prominent fruity-sour profile featuring notes of fresh apple, black cherry, and red currant. Supportive toasty malt provides depth, complemented by complex oak-derived accents of vanilla and a light oxidized Madeira character. Acetic acid is present but restrained, avoiding a dominant vinegary note. No hop aroma.
Taste. Initial impression is a refreshing, crisp acidity balanced by toasty-rich reddish malts. High fruit complexity suggests plums and sour cherries. Oak maturation contributes subtle vanilla and woody tannins. Bitterness is low, derived from spicy hops and organic acids. The finish is dry and wine-like, with a lingering, pleasant tartness and a hint of fruity sweetness that softens the acidic bite.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a prickly, refreshing acidity. Moderate carbonation with fine bubbles. Noticeable but low astringency from oak tannins provides structure. Deceivingly light on the palate despite its complexity, with no significant alcohol warmth.

La Vichtenaar trae il suo nome dalla città di Vichte in cui ha sede il birrificio Verhaeghe. Dopo la fermentazione primaria e una successiva lagerizzazione, la birra subisce un periodo di maturazione della durata di alcuni mesi in enormi botti di rovere la cui capacità varia dai 5000 ai 25000 litri. La permanenza in botte, e il contatto con i microorganismi presenti all'interno delle stesse, conferiscono alla birra un piacevolissimo gusto acidulo molto rinfrescante e dissetante. Ha un bel colore ambrato carico, tendente al bruno, con riflessi rossastri e una schiuma color nocciola molto persistente. Al naso spiccano sentori di frutta rossa sciroppata (ciliegie, ribes, fragole, lamponi) accompagnati da caramello, biscotto e miele oltre ad uno speziato non troppo invadente. In bocca la nota acetica è ben presente ma non eccessiva, ben bilanciata da una dolcezza fruttata.
