Dates from 1955. Originally this beer was only brewed for New Year’s Eve celebrations. “Rochefort 8” begins with a density of 20.8º Plato and reaches a final 9.2% ABV. Due to the overwhelming success of this beer, the monks decided around 1960 to brew it on a regular basis. Sometimes this beer is also referred to as the “Special”.

Het is slechts negen brouwerijen ter wereld vergund het predikaat ‘erkend trappist’ te voeren: Rochefort is er een van. De brouwerij, gelegen in een klooster dat oorspronkelijk een nonnenklooster was, heeft bij het opstarten van haar activiteiten de hulp van vele andere cisterciënzers gehad. Het meest in het oog springen Pater Anselmus en de broeders van Chimay. Pater Anselmus, broeder brouwer van de trappisten van Achel, richt de brouwerij in en brouwt het eerste bier met het recept van ‘Paters Vaatje’, het oorspronkelijke Achelse bier in 1899. Vier maal per week nemen de monniken de roerstok ter hand en brouwen zij, de brouwsels zijn tussen de 7.500 en 10.000 liter wat afhankelijk is van het gewenste alcoholvolume. Gedurende het jaar wordt er niet meer dan 1.800.000 liter bier gebrouwen – dat is niet bijster veel!

Rochefort 8, ook de ‘speciale’ genoemd, werd voor het eerst in 1955 gebrouwen en is daarmee het jongste bier van de paters, naast de 6 en de 10. Met een alcoholgehalte van 9,2% per volume is het een knoert van een bier en zeker een icoon van de stijl.

Trappistes Rochefort 8 9.2% ABV

Rochefort Brewery (Brasserie de Rochefort) is a Belgian brewery that produces four beers designated as Trappist beers. The brewery is associated with the Rochefort Abbey, which originated in the thirteenth century. The current brewery dates from 1899.

The earliest mention of a brewery at the monastery dates from 1595. The abbey and its brewery were closed in 1794. The abbey was re-established in 1887 and the brewery was re-established in 1899. Around fifteen monks currently live at Rochefort Abbey.

The water for the beer is drawn from a well inside the monastery walls. Rochefort uses Pilsener and Munich-type malts, and Hallertau and Golding hops.

Yellowish-brown in colour, with more fruits in the aroma and a slight amount of Demi-Sec.
