Trappist Westvleteren 8

Belgian Strong Ale 8 º 35 IBU
This legendary Belgian Dubbel presents a masterful balance of monastic tradition and rustic depth. A dark amber pour reveals a complex bouquet of green walnuts, soft orchard fruits, and toasted caramel. On the palate, the malt character is exceptionally deep, evoking the raw, earthy essence of barley husks alongside rich, caramelized sugars. While many Trappist ales lean toward sweetness, this expression is defined by a surprisingly distinct and striking hop bitterness that cleanses the palate. The 8% ABV provides a refined warmth, supporting a harmonious finish that remains remarkably dry and complex, showcasing the signature house yeast and artisanal brewing process of Westvleteren.
Appearance. Dark amber to deep copper with reddish depths (14-17 SRM). Generally clear with an abundant, dense, and long-lasting off-white head that exhibits strong, persistent lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity with a rich malty core of caramel and toast. Unique notes of green nuts and walnuts complement moderate fruity esters of plum and raisin. Low spicy, peppery phenols and a faint herbal hop presence add complexity.
Taste. Initial impression is malty-rich with flavors of toasted bread and caramel. Mid-palate reveals complex layers of dried fruit and a distinct grain-forward character reminiscent of barley husks. Finishes moderately dry with a striking, firm hop bitterness and lingering spicy yeast phenols. Harmonious balance where malt is prominent but bitterness is assertive for the style.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, creamy texture. Medium-high carbonation creates a lively mouthfeel. Noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth without being hot or solventy.

Trappist Westvleteren 8 Belgian Dubbel Price: $48 Westvleteren's dubbel can be recognized by its blue cap. Like the other Westvleteren beers, the bottle does not have a label, and the cap therefore has all the required information. Dark amber colour. Crowned with an abundant and strong lacing head. The aroma of the Westvleteren 8 is an attractive combination of green nuts, soft fruit and a touch of caramel. The different flavours of this beer lead to a harmonious yet complex taste. One tastes the malts, as it were, up to barley husk. The aftertaste is characterised by a distinct and striking hop bitterness.
