Stone Ruination IPA stands as a monumental tribute to the origins of the West Coast Double IPA. This original 2002 formulation delivers an aggressive, unwavering hop profile dominated by resinous pine and sharp citrus zest. A lean, neutral malt backbone provides just enough structure to support the massive bitterness without introducing cloying sweetness, ensuring a refreshing yet palate-shredding experience. The fermentation is exceptionally clean, allowing the bold, old-school hop character to remain the undisputed protagonist. It concludes with an intensely dry, lingering finish that defines the ruinous nature of its legendary bitterness, epitomizing the uncompromising spirit of early craft brewing.
Appearance. Deep gold to light orange-copper with brilliant clarity. Pours with a thick, persistent, off-white head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Intense hop aroma featuring heavy resin, dank pine, and bright grapefruit rind. The malt character is very low and neutral, presenting a slight crackery note, while the fermentation profile is clean with a whisper of alcohol.
Taste. A massive explosion of hop flavor mirrors the aroma with pithy citrus and earthy pine. The bitterness is very high and assertive, yet clean rather than harsh. A minimal, supportive malt presence yields to a bone-dry, crisp finish where the bitterness lingers long into the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture from hop oils. Carbonation is moderate-high, providing a scrubbing effect. A gentle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present but subtle.
