American Barleywine 14 º

Side Project Brewing

This American Barleywine presents a masterclass in intensity and barrel integration. A base of American malts delivers a concentrated core of rich toffee and deep caramel, further complexed by seventeen months in bourbon barrels which infuse layers of charred oak, smooth vanilla, and a distinct bourbon warmth. Despite the English Ale strain's fruity esters and a leathery backbone, the American hops provide a persistent, resinous counterpoint to the massive malt sweetness. The result is a viscous, contemplative sipper where the initial fruitiness and hop bitterness evolve into a long, warming finish of dark sugar and spirit-forward complexity.

Appearance. Deep copper to dark amber with distinct ruby highlights. Pours with a thin, tan collar of foam that dissipates quickly into a light ring; low head retention is expected given the high ABV. Brilliant clarity with visible legs when swirled.

Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of rich toffee, toasted caramel, and vanilla bean from the bourbon barrels. Moderate fruity esters suggesting dried plums and raisins. Hop character is moderate, leaning toward resinous and slightly citrusy American hops, though somewhat muted by age. Strong bourbon presence with hints of old leather and toasted oak.

Taste. Massive initial impact of malty sweetness, featuring layers of burnt sugar, toffee, and caramel. The American hops provide a firm, assertive bitterness that prevents the high gravity from becoming cloying. Mid-palate reveals bourbon-soaked oak, vanilla, and a hint of dark fruit. The finish is long and complex, fading into a lingering warmth of spirits and chewy malt. Alcohol is noticeable but smooth.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally viscous with a chewy, luscious texture. Low carbonation. Significant alcohol warmth is present, providing a pleasant glow without harshness. Smooth and velvety on the tongue with no perceptible astringency.

Ogni componente del blend viene selezionato per valorizzare acidità, rusticità e complessità aromatica senza mai perdere finezza e bevibilità.

Al naso emergono agrumi maturi, pesca bianca, albicocca, fieno, cantina, pepe bianco e leggere sfumature funky e vinose. Il sorso è secco, vibrante e minerale, con acidità raffinata, carbonazione vivace e una struttura elegante che evolve continuamente nel bicchiere. Il finale è lungo, pulito e leggermente tannico, con richiami al rovere e alla fermentazione spontanea.
