Põhjala

This Imperial expression of an American Porter offers a masterclass in barrel integration, weaving together the distinct threads of Cognac, Sherry, and Islay whisky. A deep base of roasted malts delivers intense notes of dark chocolate and espresso, while the Islay casks impart a sophisticated layer of peat smoke. The Sherry influence adds rich depths of toasted walnut and dried figs, complemented by the floral, vinous elegance of Cognac. At 11% ABV, the palate is exceptionally broad, finishing with a warming, sophisticated complexity that balances assertive bitterness against a decadent, multi-layered sweetness and lingering oak character.

Appearance. Opaque, deep ebony with garnet-tinted highlights at the edges. Crowns with a thick, persistent tan head that leaves dense, creamy lacing. SRM 40+.

Aroma. High intensity. Potent layers of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and burnt sugar. The Islay influence provides a prominent smoky, medicinal peat character, while the Sherry and Cognac contribute aromas of raisin, plum, and subtle oak tannins. Moderate dark fruit esters and a hint of vanilla.

Taste. Bold roasted malt flavors dominate the entry, transitioning into bittersweet chocolate and charred bread. Significant barrel character emerges mid-palate, featuring smoky peat, earthy oak, and nutty oxidative notes from the Sherry. Firm bitterness provides structure against the rich malt body. Finishes long and complex with lingering notes of dark fruit, campfire smoke, and a dry-ish roasted grain quality.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. A significant, well-integrated alcohol warmth glows in the finish without being harsh or fusel. Minimal astringency.

Pohjala Kamin es una Imperial Porter añejada en barriles de Cognac, Jerez y whisky de Islay. En el paladar se combinan frutos rojos dulces con una salinidad similar al yodo, recordando el fuego en la playa de Islay. Además, se pueden percibir peras escalfadas, especias de invierno, clavo de olor y una acidez reminiscente de bayas. Los taninos vinosos equilibran el sabor, mientras que un dulzor suave y malteado finaliza la experiencia. En apariencia, es completamente negra con una cabeza de espuma marrón oscuro. En nariz, se aprecian aromas ahumados y vinosos del cognac, combinados con notas de ciruela y mermelada de frambuesa.
