Liefmans Kriek Brut is a masterfully blended Fruit Beer, marrying the deep, vinous character of Oud Bruin and Goudenband with an abundance of fresh black cherries. This mixed-fermentation ale undergoes up to three years of maturation, resulting in an elegant, deep reddish-brown pour with a fine pale head. The sensory profile is dominated by intense, juicy cherry aromas interlaced with sophisticated notes of almond and seasoned wood. On the palate, a delicate balance of residual sweetness and refreshing acidity prevails, offering complex layers of dark fruit and toasted malt that culminate in a dry, refined finish.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown to mahogany with brilliant ruby highlights. Topped by a dense, light pink to off-white head with good lacing and retention. Clarity is generally high, though a faint haze may be present from the heavy fruit addition.
Aroma. High intensity of fresh, tart black cherries. The mixed fermentation contributes complex lactic acidity and subtle earthy funk. Underlying the fruit are rich malt notes of caramel and toast, complemented by a distinctive marzipan or almond character derived from cherry pits and aged wood.
Taste. The initial impression is a burst of vibrant, acidic cherry flavor followed by the structural malt depth of the base beer. Low hop bitterness allows the fruit's natural tartness to provide balance. The mid-palate reveals hints of dried plum and wood, while the finish is crisp, dry, and elegantly lingering.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a lively, moderate-high carbonation that cleanses the palate. A mild tannic astringency from the cherry skins adds structure. Alcohol warmth is well-integrated and subtle at six percent ABV.
