A abadia e a cervejaria de La Trappe não só têm uma história rica, mas são também edifícios muito bonitos que vale a pena visitar.

Berkel-Enschot foi o local onde nasceu a La Trappe e onde fica o mosteiro Trapense “Onze Lieve Vrouw van Koningshoeven”. O mosteiro, fundado em 1881 por uma ordem Trapense refugiada de França, foi construído numa pequena região silvestre, rodeada de pequenas quintas e criações de ovelhas. Para subsistirem, os monges começaram a recuperar e cultivar a terra pouco fértil de Koningshoeven, e tornou-se desde logo evidente que os custos excederiam em muito as receitas da venda dos produtos da quinta e tiveram de encontrar uma solução, especialmente quando mais e mais candidatos pediam a admissão para se juntarem à vida monástica. Quando as atividades da quinta já não supriam as necessidades básicas, o monge superior Nivard Schweykart decidiu começar a produzir cerveja. Este seria o início da única cervejeira Trapense holandesa e que hoje é a fonte de rendimento mais importante do mosteiro. De acordo com os habitantes locais, estas quintas eram chamadas de Koningshoeven – as quintas reais – por terem sido um dia propriedade do Rei Willem II. La Trappe Dubbel Название "La Trappe" происходит от французского аббатства "Нотр-Дам де ла Гранд Траппе" в нормандской деревне Солиньи-ла-Трапп. После гонения в XIX веке монахи-трапписты нашли убежище в деревушке Berkel-Enschot в Нидерландах, в провинции Брабант. Здесь в 1881 году на участке плодородной земли, куда входили несколько фермерских домов и большой сарай для овец, было основано аббатство Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Koningshoeven (Монастырь Пресвятой Богородицы в Кёнигсхофене). В 1884 году монахи начали варить пиво. До сих пор пивоварение в стенах этого аббатства придерживается вековых методов изготовления траппистского пива. Поначалу пиво варилось только для нужд монахов.
