Floreffe Double presents a nuanced take on the Belgian Dubbel, defined by a rich interplay of special malts and traditional brown candi sugar. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of liquorice, chocolate, and coffee, accented by subtle aniseed and white fruit notes. The palate is deeply malty, showcasing the artisanal influence of its monastic origins with a distinct toasted and biscuit-like depth. A unique, slightly acidic brightness lifts the roasted grain character, leading to a long, clean finish with a faint herbal bitterness. This bottle-conditioned ale balances traditional sweetness with a crisp, spicy complexity that evolves as it warms.
Appearance. Dark amber to deep brown with attractive reddish reflections (10-17 SRM). Large, dense, and long-lasting creamy off-white head with persistent lacing. Generally clear despite the bottle conditioning.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity. Rich malty aroma featuring notes of toast, chocolate, and coffee from the special malts. Prominent brown candi sugar sweetness. Fruity esters suggesting white fruits and subtle raisins. Low to moderate spicy phenols with hints of aniseed and liquorice. Low herbal hop character.
Taste. Full-flavored initial impression dominated by rich malt, biscuit, and toasted grain. Sweetness from brown candi sugar is balanced by a subtle, refreshing acidity that heightens the roasted character. Chocolate and liquorice flavors emerge mid-palate. Low hop bitterness provides support without being prominent. Finishes moderately dry and long with a lingering hint of toasted grain and a clean, slightly acidic aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium to medium-full body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. High carbonation provides a lively, scrubbing mouthfeel that lightens the palate. Subtle, soft alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated. No astringency.

Served cold, the spicy aromas will come to the fore, whereas when served at cellar temperature they give way to toasted, biscuit notes. Worth rediscovering again and again
