Op beroepsvlak leerden toen Jef Van den Steen, wiskundeleraar, en Dirk De Pauw, jurist en gemeentescretaris, elkaar kennen in Erpe-Mere. Na aantal gesprekken tussen “pot en pint” bleek dat beiden eenzelfde liefde koesterden: het thuisbrouwen… Snel kwamen er, met wisselend succes, gezamenlijke brouwseltjes uit het 50 liter keteltje. Na nog wat jaren proefbrouwen, besloten beiden de gok te wagen om een kleine brouwerij te starten. In 2002 werd een eerste kleine vennootschap opgericht, en in 2004 omgevormd tot een echte Bvba met een eigen kleine 500 liter installatie, voormalige eigendom van de gestopte brouwerij Meesters in Galmaarden.

The name refers to local history. In the 18th century Jan De Lichte was the leader of an infamous gang of robbers in the region of Aalst – Zottegem. He was executed in Aalst at the age of 25.
Jan De Lichte is a wheat beer. But according to ancient tradition it has become a four grains beer. Barley and wheat are used of course, but there is also oats and buckwheat.
Jan De Lichte is the only Glazen Toren beer to which spices are added, following the Belgian tradition of wheat beer brewing. The use of coriander and curaçoa makes for the extremely fresh, citrus-like taste. The rather high alcohol percentage (7.5 %) indicates that it is more than just a thirst quencher.
Quite like Jan De Lichte himself some 250 years ago, the beer is not innocuous.

Jan de lichte era un brigante fiammingo, e questa Birra Artigianale prende il nome proprio da lui. Ha un colore biondo brillante, schiuma fine mediamente persistente. E’ ricca di aromi citrici, speziati, fruttati e notevolmente agrumati, che rinfrescano e lasciano una piacevole sensazione di pulizia. Corpo all’inizio molto snello, senza essere sfuggente; nel perdurare della degustazione vengono fuori prepotentemente le note speziate del coriandolo, dolciastre del curacao e rinfrescanti dell’agrumato, che la rendono molto beverina. Molto forte l’impronta speziata anche nel finale.

Comunemente potremmo classificarla come una Belgian Strong Ale ma data l’alta quantità di frumento sarebbe più coretto definirla come una Imperial Blanche!
Appare di colore dorato chiaro, schiuma persistente bianca, velata.
Al naso e al gusto speziata, floreale, agrumata!
In bocca secca, carbonatazione sostenuta, finale elegantemente amaro. Facilità di beva notevole, prodotto molto interessante!
