Wist je dat de Extra een van de oudste bieren van Westmalle is? Meer nog: hij behoort tot een lange traditie die even oud als de brouwerij zelf. We springen even terug in de tijd, naar 1836. Dat jaar besloten de trappisten van Westmalle om zelf te brouwen. Ze hadden nood aan een eigen, lokale drank voor bij de maaltijd. In onze contreien was het niet meer dan logisch dat dat bier zou worden. Dit alles geheel in lijn met de kloosterregels van Sint-Benedictus, die de leidraad is voor de levenswijze van de Trappisten.
De monniken gingen dus aan het brouwen, en dat resulteerde eerst in een donker tafelbier. Uit geschriften weten we dat een tijdje later ook een witbier opdook. Begin 20ste eeuw was er dan weer sprake van een blond ‘Extra-Gersten’ bier: een voorloper van de Extra. In al die tijd stond steevast een lichtere variant op tafel bij de monniken zelf. De Dubbel en Tripel gunden ze graag aan de buitenwereld, maar binnen de abdijmuren kozen ze voor sobere kwaliteit die beter aansluit bij hun levensstijl.

True to our brewing philosophy, the Extra is brewed with the purest ingredients: selected barley varieties, a balanced blend of hop flowers, home-grown yeast and pure water from the deep Diestian layer. And just as with our Dubbel and Tripel, it is a top-fermented beer, including the typical fermentation in the bottle.
Did you know that the Extra is one of the oldest Westmalle beers? What’s more, it is part of a long tradition that is as old as the brewery itself. Let’s go back in time to 1836. That was the year the Trappists of Westmalle decided to brew their own beer.
They needed their own local drink to be consumed during meals. In our part of the world, it was only logical that this would be beer. All this in line with the monastic Rule of Saint Benedict, which serves as the Trappist’s guiding principle.
THE BEER OF THE MONKS SINCE 1836. THE INSPIRING STORY BEHIND WESTMALLE EXTRA
So the monks started brewing, which first resulted in a dark table beer. We know from writings that a wheat beer also appeared some time later. At the beginning of the 20th century, there was again talk of a blond “Extra Gersten” (extra barley) beer: a predecessor of the Westmalle Trappist Extra. In all that time, a lighter variant was invariably on the monks’ own table. They were happy to offer their Dubbel and Tripel to the outside world, but within the abbey walls, they opted for austere quality that better suited their lifestyle.
