Brouwerij Verhaeghe Vichte è un birrificio a conduzione familiare situato nelle Fiandre occidentali, fondato da Adolphe e Paul Verhaeghe nel 1885.
Il birrificio conduce un’attività importante ed apprezzata in tutto il paese sino a quando si vede costretto ad arrestare la produzione durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Al termine del conflitto il birrificio ripristinò l’impianto e seppe ripartire, includendo nella propria produzione anche stili a bassa fermentazione, inconsueti in Belgio a quei tempi.
Il birrificio si è sempre distinto per la filosofia un peu moins, mais meilleur (meno, ma meglio). Verhaeghe produce infatti poche birre ma di alta qualità, come le Red Flemish Ale di casa, senza dubbi tra le rappresentanti più importanti al mondo del tradizionale stile belga. La Duchesse de Bourgogne è sicuramente la birra più nota, e l’esempio commerciale più noto del pianeta del proprio stile.

Duchesse de Bourgogne er et godt alternativ til Rodenbach, selvom den ikke er helt så kendt som denne. Den har rigtig mange ligheder med især Bourgogne de Flandres, og den skal også behandles på samme måde som denne, dvs. drik den kølig og gem den ikke for længe.
Egner sig nok ikke til lagring i længere tid. Efter ca. et år er det som om, den næsten bliver mere syrlig og måske endda en anelse bitter i eftersmagen. Den kommer måske til at ligne Rodenbach Grand Cru, som jo lagrer på bryggeriet i tre år, men man skal huske på, at denne lagrer i et gigantisk egefad i et miljø på bryggeriet, som er specielt tilpasset lagring.

L’origine du nom demeure lui assez incertain. Selon certains, il viendrait de l’auteur anglais Mickaël Jackson qui aimait rapprocher les “vielles brunes” aux vins de Bourgogne. Pour d’’autres en revanche, le nom serait un hommage à Marie de Bourgogne qui repose à Bruges.
La bière Duchesse de Bourgogne est certainement la plus réputée de la brasserie. Elle bénéficie d’une refermentation en fûts de chêne pendant 18 mois, avant d’être complétée par une bière de 8 mois.
La bière présente une robe brune aux reflets acajou. Le nez est aigre-doux, caractéristique des bières de ce style. Des notes boisées se mêlent à des touches de réglisse et de fruits noirs.
Le palais est met à l’honneur des notes de chocolat et de caramel relevé par une certaine acidité en fin de bouche. Les saveurs profondes et davantage “sucrées” que dans les rouges flamandes traditionnelles fond de cette bière une compagne idéale pour un dessert aux fruits et/ou chocolat.
