En los primeros años de la era moderna de la elaboración de cerveza, hace unos doscientos años, muchos cerveceros producían durante los meses de invierno una cerveza oscura y fuerte de “reserva” (stock beer), que servía como base de cerveza fermentada para añadir a las cervezas elaboradas en los meses de verano, mucho más variables. Old Peculier probablemente debe su origen a esta práctica. Su nombre rinde homenaje al estatus eclesiástico único de Masham como “Court of the Peculier” y también hace referencia al carácter fuerte de la cerveza. Durante muchos años fue conocida cariñosamente como el “caldo de lunáticos” de Yorkshire.
Old Peculier es una cerveza hermosa y, a la vez, muy sencilla, elaborada con una generosa mezcla de las mejores maltas pálidas, maltas crystal y cebada tostada, junto con dos lúpulos amargos combinados con el majestuoso y noble lúpulo Fuggle. El resultado es una cerveza de cuerpo pleno y sabor impresionante, con sutiles notas de cereza y ricos matices frutales. Se disfruta de forma excelente acompañada de guisos contundentes, quesos intensos y postres dulces.

V raných letech moderní pivovarnické éry, asi před dvěma sty lety, mnoho sládků vyrábělo v zimních měsících tmavé, silné „zásobní“ pivo, které poskytovalo základní množství kvašeného piva k přidávání do piv vařených v poněkud nestálejších letních měsících.
Old Peculier pravděpodobně vděčí za svůj původ právě tomuto. Název vzdává hold jedinečnému církevnímu statusu Mashamu jako „dvora podivínů“ a je také odkazem na silnou charakteristiku piva! Po mnoho let se mu láskyplně říkalo yorkshirský „vývar bláznů“.

With countless awards to its credit, it is something of which every Briton can be very proud and is the epitome of the greatest of British brewing tradition.
In the early years of the modern brewing era, about two hundred years ago, many brewers produced a dark, strong ‘stock’ beer in the winter months, to provide a base amount of fermented beer to add to beers brewed in the rather more volatile months of the summer.
Old Peculier probably owes its origins to this. The name pays tribute to the unique ecclesiastical status of Masham as a ‘Court of the Peculier’ and is also reference to the strong characteristic of the beer! For many years it was affectionately referred to as Yorkshire’s ‘Lunatic’s Broth’.

Theakston è uno storico birrificio inglese fondato nel 1827 nella cittadina di Masham, nello Yorkshire Dales, grazie a Robert Theakston, agricoltore e birraio che inizia a produrre birra che vende direttamente presso i locali adibiti a brewpub. Il sito ha un importante valore storico: 0Masham è infatti la sede della Corte del Peculiar, creata per il volere dell’Arcivescovo dello Yorkshire.
Nel 1875 viene fondato ufficialmente il birrificio: grazie all’aumento della produzione e al notevole riscontro da parte del pubblico, la fama di Theakston e delle sue birre comincia a circolare per tutto il paese. La crescente richiesta convince la proprietà ad acquisire un nuoto sito produttivo – la Carlisle Brewery – ma l’investimento porta più problemi che successi, decretando l’inizio di un declino che termina con la cessione di Theakston al gruppo Scottish & Newcastle.
Nel 2004 un clamoroso evento: gli eredi di Robert Theakston ritornano in possesso della brewery di famiglia, acquisendo nuovamente la proprietà: Theakston ritorna a casa e diventa negli anni uno dei più amati e importanti birrifici tradizionali dell’intera Inghilterra.

OLD ALE
Old Ale is a simple enough style to figure out. At least, once you understand that there are three or four beer styles called Old Ale. The first is the best known - the strong dark Old Peculier style. The second type of Old Ale is a blended dark ale. At least one of the beers comprising the blend will be aged for a couple of years in wood casks. The third version of Old Ale is a form of mild – a low-gravity dark ale. Another version of Old Ale is closely related to the first. For me, these are robustly malty beers, akin to a top-fermented version of a doppelbock.
