Theakston è uno storico birrificio inglese fondato nel 1827 nella cittadina di Masham, nello Yorkshire Dales, grazie a Robert Theakston, agricoltore e birraio che inizia a produrre birra che vende direttamente presso i locali adibiti a brewpub. Il sito ha un importante valore storico: 0Masham è infatti la sede della Corte del Peculiar, creata per il volere dell’Arcivescovo dello Yorkshire.
Nel 1875 viene fondato ufficialmente il birrificio: grazie all’aumento della produzione e al notevole riscontro da parte del pubblico, la fama di Theakston e delle sue birre comincia a circolare per tutto il paese. La crescente richiesta convince la proprietà ad acquisire un nuoto sito produttivo – la Carlisle Brewery – ma l’investimento porta più problemi che successi, decretando l’inizio di un declino che termina con la cessione di Theakston al gruppo Scottish & Newcastle.
Nel 2004 un clamoroso evento: gli eredi di Robert Theakston ritornano in possesso della brewery di famiglia, acquisendo nuovamente la proprietà: Theakston ritorna a casa e diventa negli anni uno dei più amati e importanti birrifici tradizionali dell’intera Inghilterra.

V raných letech moderní pivovarnické éry, asi před dvěma sty lety, mnoho sládků vyrábělo v zimních měsících tmavé, silné „zásobní“ pivo, které poskytovalo základní množství kvašeného piva k přidávání do piv vařených v poněkud nestálejších letních měsících.
Old Peculier pravděpodobně vděčí za svůj původ právě tomuto. Název vzdává hold jedinečnému církevnímu statusu Mashamu jako „dvora podivínů“ a je také odkazem na silnou charakteristiku piva! Po mnoho let se mu láskyplně říkalo yorkshirský „vývar bláznů“.

Old Peculier probably owes its origins to this. The name pays tribute to the unique ecclesiastical status of Masham as a ‘Court of the Peculier’ and is also reference to the strong characteristic of the beer! For many years it was affectionately referred to as Yorkshire’s ‘Lunatic’s Broth’.

Old Peculier er en smuk, men meget simpel øl, brygget med en meget generøs blanding af de fineste krystal og ristede byg med to bitre humletyper kombineret med den majestætiske og ædle Fuggle humle. Dette munder ud i en øl med en fantastisk fyldig smag med subtile kirsebær og rige frugttoner.
Den smager fantastisk, når den ledsages af fyldige gryderetter, stærke oste og søde desserter.
