Straffe Hendrik Quadruple is a rich and intense dark Belgian ale, but this is aged on oak for roundness and smooth long finish. It is brewed with a subtle blend of specialty malts, which give the ale an extremely dark colour and a chewy, malty complex character. The quadruple combines a clean dryness with a warm full bodied mouth feel and essences of fruit. Secondary fermentation in the bottle creates a living ale that can be aged and will have an evolution of taste profiles over time. It is brewed by the last active brewery in the historical city of Bruges. The town archives first mention the brewery in 1546. Since 1856, the famous brewing family Maes-Vanneste has owned the brewery.

Straffe Hendrik Heritage is a special variety of the Straffe Hendrik Quadrupel, as it is a one year oak barrel aged beer. The beer is brewed in autumn and is only available in a limited edition. The taste and fragrance of the beer are very complex and evolve through the years. The tannin from the barrels blends exquisitely with the special malts in the beer. The combination of the spiciness and bitterness of the quadrupel with the subtle taste of wine and wood from the barrels is inimitable. Licorice and dark fruits like raisins, prunes and figs can also be discovered. With age the beer will develop a hint of porto as well.

The initial taste is one of caramel before the hop bitterness and the malt come to the fore. The finish gives a hint of banana as well as citrus.

The launch of Straffe Hendrik – still the brewery’s flagship beer – heralded the era of strong degustation beers at De Halve Maan.

Its brewer is the oldest in Bruges, based in its historic city centre, and also well known for its Brugse Zot Blonde and Donker (dark). De Halve Maan has been brewing for five centuries.
