Viene prodotta nel classico stile quadrupel e aderisce alla ricetta originale del 1946.
Ha un aroma molto fruttato che è il risultato dell’utilizzo di un lievito unico (ereditato nientemeno che da Westvleteren). E’ ricca di sapori diversi e complessi e si distingue per il suo finale lungo e agrodolce. Grazie al suo gusto morbido e rotondo e al perfetto equilibrio tra amaro e dolce, questa birra si beve molto facilmente.

Since 2012 we have produced a limited number of 1.5 litre bottles, our Magnums. To create this special edition, the Abt 12 is bottled into a special dark brown St.Bernardus magnum bottle on which the brewery logo is printed in relief. It also comes with a Bière Belge bottleneck, a branded cork and a unique muselet, the wire cage around the cork. Each edition of the labels on these bottles has been designed by a new artist, and all of their art works are kept in the brewery’s art collection.
The Belgian artist with Italian roots Giampaolo Amoruso created a mouth-blown work of art entitled 'Bernardus e Marco'.

Il s'agit de la bière vedette de la brasserie Sint-Bernardus. La recette de la bière remonte à 1946, et le résultat est une bière foncée avec une mousse de couleur ivoire. Il s'agit d'une bière de fermentation haute.
Les ingrédients de la bière sont l'eau, le sucre, le malt de seigle, la levure et le houblon provenant du champ de houblon de Sint-Bernardus.
Au nez, vous avez un arôme fruité. Cet arôme est dû à la levure spécifique de la brasserie Sint-Bernardus. En bouche, vous pouvez remarquer un bon équilibre entre l'amer et le sucré. Même la finale est longue et douce-amère. L'Abt 12 présente des notes de caramel, de chocolat et de malt torréfié.
L'Abt 12 est également l'une des bières les plus fortes de la brasserie, avec un taux d'alcool de 10 %.
La bière portait autrefois un autre nom et s'appelait Sixtus. C'était parce que la brasserie brassait pour l'Abbaye de Westvleteren.
La bière a également remporté plusieurs prix et a même été reconnue jusqu'en Australie.
La Sint Bernardus Abt 12 est également l'une des bières les plus fortes de Belgique.
