Zomerdijk Brewing and Blending Anne

Anne is an elegant Mixed-Fermentation Ale aged for 24 months in Bordeaux barrels, showcasing a sophisticated marriage of wood and wild yeast. The extended maturation introduces a deep, intricate complexity characterized by refined Brettanomyces funk and a refreshing, natural acidity. The wine-barrel influence imparts subtle vinous notes of dark fruit and oak tannins, which integrate seamlessly with a dry, attenuated finish. Bracing and thirst-quenching yet profoundly deep, this collaboration reflects a masterful balance of rustic charm and technical precision, offering a challenging yet rewarding profile that highlights the evolving character of long-term barrel aging and the nuances of microflora development.
Appearance. Deep gold to light copper (10–14 SRM) with a slight, persistent haze from extended aging. Pour produces a moderate, off-white head with fair retention that fades to a fine collar, leaving light lacing.
Aroma. High intensity featuring a complex bouquet of aged Brettanomyces funk, including wet hay, barnyard, and horse blanket. Distinctive vinous character from Bordeaux barrels adds notes of red grape skins, toasted oak, and a hint of vanilla. Subtle stone fruit esters and a clean, sharp lactic acidity provide a bright counterpoint to the earthy base.
Taste. Dry and highly attenuated with an initial impression of bright acidity. The flavor profile is dominated by earthy and spicy funk, supported by vinous dark berries and wood tannins from the two-year barrel rest. Malt character is low and cracker-like, allowing the oak and fermentation byproducts to lead. Bitterness is minimal, finishing bone-dry and crisp with a lingering, tart aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with high attenuation that creates a lean, refreshing structure. Carbonation is moderate to high, providing a prickly sensation. A very light tannic astringency from the oak is present, accompanied by a subtle, well-integrated alcohol warmth.
