This award-winning Black IPA strikes a masterful balance between darkness and brightness. Pouring jet black with a persistent tan head with golden highlights, it opens with a vibrant, high-intensity aroma of tropical fruits and ripe red berries. On the palate, the interplay of herbaceous, resinous hop character and smooth, debittered chocolate malt creates a complex experience without the acridity or burnt tones of a traditional stout. The bitterness is firm yet refined, leading to a crisp, dry finish. It captures the essence of a Specialty IPA, offering the aggressive hop-forward profile of an American IPA disguised in a cloak of midnight malts.
Appearance. Jet black color (SRM 35-40); intense, persistent light tan head with distinctive golden-tinged lacing; opaque in the glass but brilliant clarity where light passes through.
Aroma. High intensity hop-forward aroma featuring prominent tropical fruit and red berry notes; subtle background support of toasted bread and light chocolate malt; clean fermentation profile with very low esters.
Taste. Initial impression of sharp, clean hops; moderate chocolate malt flavor provides a smooth base without any burnt or ashy character; hop flavors follow the nose with herbaceous and tropical fruit notes; firm, medium-high bitterness; dry finish with a lingering, pleasant bitterness and a hint of roasted grain.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, velvety texture; moderate carbonation; light, well-integrated alcohol warmth; lacks the heavy astringency often found in dark beers.
