Doch auch abseits des Sports wurde eine andere Leidenschaft auf diesen Reisen neu entfacht:
Wir entdeckten Bier wieder für uns!
Denn Bier war für uns beide in der Heimat eigentlich nur noch langweiliges, gefiltertes Pilsener, das sich nur durch den Grad der Bitterkeit von anderen Bieren unterschied. Ok, mal ein Weizen aus Bayern oder ein Schwarzbier brachte schon Abwechslung, wenn es ausnahmsweise mal ein Restaurant auf der Karte hatte. Die Biervielfalt im Land des Deutschen Reinheitsgebotes war jedenfalls sehr überschaubar und eintönig.
In Boston lernten wir durch die regionalen Craftbeer-Brauereien wieder neue „alte“ Bierstile kennen. Wir waren sofort begeistert von den intensiv fruchtigen IPA’s, den hopfig grasigen Pale Ales und saisonalen Spezialitäten, wie z.B. Kürbisbier zu Halloween und Lebkuchenbier zur Weihnachtszeit…Was dort mit unterschiedlichen Malz- und Hopfensorten an Geschmacksvielfalt erzielt wurde, war in Deutschland zu dieser Zeit schlicht nicht zu bekommen.
Da wir solche Biere gar nicht oder nur sehr schwer über Onlinehändler kaufen konnten, beschlossen wir notgedrungen, mit dem Heimbrauen zu beginnen…
Seit dem entwickeln und kreieren wir unsere Rezepte für neue Biere immer in kleinen Mengen in unserem eigenen Braukeller. Vom Einmaischen, Würze kochen, Abläutern, Kühlen, bis hin zum Flaschen abfüllen, machen wir dort noch heute jedes Bier von Hand. Und zwar mit jedem Rezept aufs Neue, bis wir mit dem Ergebnis absolut zufrieden sind.
Wenn ein Rezept dann ausgereift ist, brauen wir in größeren Chargen.
Da wir zur Zeit nur über eine winzige 50 Liter Heimbrauanlage verfügen, greifen wir auf die Möglichkeit des Fremd-Brauens zurück. Auch unter den Begriffen Kuckucksbrauen und Gypsy Brauen bekannt, nutzen wir die Freikapazitäten anderer Brauereien und fertigen dort unser Bier nach eigenem Rezept.
Sudden Death Brewing steht dabei für unsere zwei Leidenschaften, Eishockey und Bierbrauen! Daher finden sich in unserm Logo auch Elemente aus beiden Bereichen wieder. Eishockeyschläger und die klassische Torwartmaske in Kombination mit den Brau- bzw. Maischepaddeln und Augenöffnungen in Form von Hopfendolden. Gleichzeitig steht Sudden Death (engl.: plötzlicher Tod) im Sport für die Spielentscheidung durch das erste gefallene Tor in einer Spielverlängerung.
Beim Eishockey ist so eine Verlängerung einer der spannendsten Momente überhaupt. Und genauso spannend sollen auch unsere Biere sein!
Wir haben uns zum Ziel gesetzt, ungewöhnliche, interessante aber dabei stets trinkbare Biere zu brauen.
