This collaborative Schwarzbier offers a modern, West Coast-inspired twist on the classic Dark German Lager. Sudden Death and Mutoïde utilize a precise malt bill to evoke notes of crisp toast and subtle dark chocolate without burnt harshness. The dry-hop addition of Spalter Select and DE Cascade transforms the traditional profile, introducing vibrant aromatic layers of resinous pine and bright citrus. At a sessionable 4.5% ABV, it maintains the style's characteristic drinkability and dry finish. The experience is defined by the tension between clean, roasted lager foundations and assertive, evergreen hop qualities, resulting in a refreshing yet complex dark ale alternative.

Appearance. Deep ruby-brown to mahogany (25-30 SRM); features a prominent, persistent tan head with fine lacing. Per the brewer's note, this version displays a noticeable chill haze instead of the traditional brilliant clarity.

Aroma. Moderate intensity with a clean lager profile. Initial notes of toasted bread and light coffee are met by a prominent hop punch of pine and citrus. Spalter Select provides a subtle herbal and spicy undercurrent beneath the brighter, resinous DE Cascade influence.

Taste. Initial toasted malt sweetness transitions into a dry, bitter-chocolate mid-palate. Hop flavors are more assertive than traditional examples, featuring distinct pine and grapefruit zest. Bitterness is firm but balanced by the malt, leading to a crisp, clean finish with a lingering, subtle roastiness in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with moderately high carbonation that enhances the crispness. Smooth texture with no astringency from the dark grains; very low alcohol warmth given the 4.5% ABV.
