This Imperial Baltic Porter presents a hauntingly complex profile, where the traditional deep malt core of dark chocolate and molasses meets the spirited influence of Brandy and Bourbon barrels. The 10.4% ABV provides a significant but integrated warmth, carrying notes of rich caramel, vanilla, and dried vine fruits. A unique addition of Brettanomyces introduces a subtle, earthy funk and a hint of dark cherry, cutting through the heavy sweetness. Expect a velvety, full-bodied experience that balances smooth roasted flavors of licorice and toasted nuts with a sophisticated, barrel-aged complexity that lingers long into the spectral night.
Appearance. Opaque dark brown with deep garnet highlights (SRM 30+). Topped with a thick, persistent, creamy tan head that leaves dense lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Rich maltiness leads with molasses, licorice, and deep toast. Barrel aging contributes prominent notes of sweet bourbon vanilla, oak, and vinous brandy. Complex fruit esters of plum, raisin, and black cherry are present, accented by a subtle, leathery funk and a noticeable but smooth alcohol presence.
Taste. Richly malty initial impression with layers of dark chocolate, toffee, and toasted nuts. The middle palate introduces smooth, roasted flavors of coffee and licorice without harshness. Brandy and Bourbon barrels provide sophisticated warmth and flavors of vanilla and dried currants. Low spicy hop flavor. Fermentation character is complex, with an earthy Brettanomyces note contributing to a surprisingly dryish, lingering finish of dark fruit and toasted oak.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally smooth with a viscous, mouth-filling texture. Moderate carbonation. Significant alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated. Minimal astringency despite the heavy roast and barrel tannins.
