Strong Ale 6.5 º 26 IBU
This British Strong Ale pours a striking copper-bronze, offering a complex sensory journey rooted in its Kentish identity. Utilizing exclusive Kent malts and Kent hops, the aroma presents a rich tapestry of toffee, honey, and crusty bread, intertwined with spicy orange and subtle Marsala wine notes. The palate is defined by a deep malty richness featuring caramel and liquorice, balanced by a triple-hopped resinous character and citrus spikes. A hint of dark fruit and a gentle acidity brighten the finish, while the bottle-conditioned nature ensures a smooth, traditional experience with a refined, integrated alcohol warmth that lingers pleasantly on the tongue.
Appearance. Deep copper-bronze to intense amber (14–18 SRM); clear with a fine, light-tan head that dissipates relatively quickly, characteristic of its bottle-conditioned nature.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity with a complex malt profile of toffee, caramel, and nuts. Pronounced fruity esters suggest spicy orange, dark fruits, and Marsala wine. Hop character is notably earthy and resinous with subtle citrus spikes.
Taste. Initial malt sweetness delivers flavors of honey, bread, and liquorice. Hop flavor provides a resinous and herbal counterpoint with light citrus notes. Bitterness is moderate and well-balanced against the rich malt. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering dark fruit character and a slight, refreshing acidity.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full, chewy body with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate to low. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, reflecting its 6.5% strength.

Originally brewed to celebrate the tercentenary of Britain's oldest brewer, 1698 is a characteristically hoppy Kentish ale, and has Protected Geographical Indication, the same unique regional protection afforded to Champagne and Parma Ham.

The ale matures naturally in the bottle and can be enjoyed fresh or allowed to settle for a few months to mellow. The natural effervescence produced by bottle-conditioning – the interaction of yeast and brewing sugars – gives 1698 fine, champagne-like bubbles that further enhance the fragrance, flavour and overall drinking experience.

A silver medal winner in the Taste of Britain Awards, 1698 has been included in the International Beer Challenge's World's Top 50 Beers and has won a Gold Award from the British Bottlers' Institute.

1698 is the connoisseur’s choice, a beer to be savoured.

Tasting Notes:

" First brewed in 1998 to celebrate Shepherd Neame's tercentenary, this copper-bronze, bottle conditioned beauty is an intense yet uniquely intricate offering thrice-hopped during the brewing process. This adds rich resinous notes and spikes of citrus to a moreish strong ale already rife with notes of liquorice, Masala wine, caramel and spicy orange. A frisson of dark fruit freshens the finish. Serve with smoked cheese."
