Schloss Eggenberg Samichlaus Classic is a monumental expression of the Doppelbock style, celebrated as the world's strongest bottom-fermented lager. This deep reddish-copper beer utilizes specialized Hürlimann yeast strains, which are meticulously selected to endure the beer's staggering 14% ABV. Following a ten-month lagering process, it presents an intense sensory journey led by aromas of cognac and toasted malt. The palate reveals decadent layers of dark cherry and the caramelized sugar and vanilla notes of crema catalana. Finishing with a distinctive peppery warmth, it balances its massive strength with masterful malt complexity and a sophisticated, velvet-like body.

Appearance. Brilliant deep reddish-copper with a warm mahogany hue. It pours with a fine-textured, tan-colored head that exhibits low retention due to the high alcohol concentration, often leaving a viscous, syrupy coating on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity with a rich, complex malt profile. Prominent notes of dark cherry and vanilla-custard crema catalana are layered with a clean, cognac-like alcohol presence. Malt character is deeply toasted and grainy, with no hop aroma or yeast-derived phenols.

Taste. Massive initial malt sweetness featuring toasted bread and deep fruitiness. Flavors of plum and cherry meld with a custard-like sweetness before transitioning into a complex finish of black pepper and warming spices. Bitterness is low, serving only to provide slight balance to the dense malt character.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally viscous with a smooth, mouth-coating creaminess. Carbonation is moderate-low. A pronounced, well-integrated alcohol warmth is felt throughout, reflecting the massive ABV and extended cold conditioning without becoming harsh.

The Samichlaus Christmas beer was first brewed in 1979 for sale in 1980. Production continued annually until 1997, when the brewery closed. In 2000, it returned, this time produced by Schloss Eggenberg in collaboration with the original Hürlimann brewers, using the original Hürlimann Samichlaus recipe.
