A sűrű és erős porter elterjedt a londoni munkásosztályban, és hamarosan jelenséggé vált országszerte, valamint a balti államokba exportálták. A stoutok kistestvérének is hívják, színe a sötét borostyántól egészen az éjfeketéig terjed, azonban a porterekben kevesebb a karamellizált, pörkölt maláta a stouthoz képest. Az egyik legizgalmasabb Ale típusú sör, mivel a kávés, étcsokis ízjegyektől kezdve akár aszaltgyümölcsre emlékeztető is lehet.
