Retorto Krakatoa is an explosive American IPA that bridges old and new worlds. It showcases a blend of American and European hops, delivering a light citrusy aroma underpinned by subtle herbal complexity. With an assertive bitterness of 75 IBU, the palate is dominated by an intense, persistent lupulin kick that stays true to its volcanic namesake. A clean, high-fermentation profile ensures the pale barley malt remains a supportive backdrop to the hop-forward character. The result is a moderately strong, dry, and decidedly bitter ale that balances citrus refreshment with a sharp, resinous edge.
Appearance. Deep gold to light reddish-amber in color with brilliant clarity. It supports a medium-sized, off-white head with good persistence and moderate lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity hop aroma featuring bright citrus notes of grapefruit and lemon, accented by a subtle spicy or floral quality from European hop varieties. Low, clean, grainy-sweet maltiness supports the hops with a neutral fermentation profile.
Taste. The palate is led by high hop bitterness and medium-high hop flavors of citrus zest and pine resin. A low, clean, bready malt presence provides a brief initial support before being overtaken by the 75 IBU bitterness. The finish is dry and crisp, leaving a lingering, clean, hoppy aftertaste.
