Protokoll Brewery Whirl
Whirl is an assertive Double IPA that showcases the classic synergy of Centennial and Citra hops. It leads with a vibrant sensory profile of grapefruit zest, resinous pine, and ripe tropical fruit, underpinned by a clean, neutral malt base. At 8.5% ABV, the beer maintains high drinkability despite its strength, offering a firm but smooth bitterness that never veers into harshness. The Centennial hops provide a floral, woodsy structure, while the Citra lends bright citrus notes. Expect a lean, drying finish that emphasizes hop saturation over malt sweetness, delivering a modern and intensely aromatic experience characteristic of the style.
Appearance. Gold to pale orange (approx. 7-10 SRM) with brilliant clarity and a moderate-sized, persistent off-white head that leaves dense lacing.
Aroma. High-intensity hop aroma featuring bright grapefruit, lemon peel, and mango from Citra, layered over Centennial's signature floral and resinous pine notes. Malt character is low and neutral, providing a grainy background, while fermentation is clean with a subtle, smooth alcohol presence.
Taste. Strong and complex hop flavors dominated by citrus oil, pine resin, and tropical stone fruit. Bitterness is firm and high (approx. 70-80 IBU) but remains smooth and well-integrated. A clean, soft malt profile offers minimal support, leading to a medium-dry finish with a lingering hoppy and resinous aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth texture and moderate to medium-high carbonation. Noticeable but well-restrained alcohol warmth is present, without any harsh hop-derived astringency.
