This Imperial Stout presents a decadent sensory experience, defined by twenty months of maturation in Rittenhouse Rye and Willett Bourbon barrels. The nose is greeted by an intense layering of dark chocolate from cocoa nibs and a bright, zesty lift from orange peel. On the palate, the Rittenhouse Rye barrels contribute a distinctive peppery spice that cuts through the rich, velvety body, while the Willett Bourbon influence provides smooth notes of vanilla and charred oak. Expect a complex interplay of roasted espresso, candied citrus, and deep toffee, culminating in a warming, luxurious finish that reflects its formidable strength and meticulous barrel aging.
Appearance. Opaque jet black (40+ SRM) with a dense, persistent dark mocha head. High viscosity and alcohol content are visible via prominent legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity; rich roasted grains and bittersweet cocoa nibs are complemented by a vibrant citrus note from orange peel. Deep bourbon-derived vanilla and spicy rye whiskey notes mingle with dark dried fruits like black currants and raisins.
Taste. Initial impression is an explosion of dark chocolate and espresso. The mid-palate reveals spicy rye grain, caramel, and a subtle zesty orange brightness. Firm bitterness balances the significant malt sweetness. The finish is long and warming with lingering toasted oak, burnt sugar, and a smooth alcohol presence.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied with a luscious, chewy, and velvety texture. Low carbonation enhances the creamy feel. Significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout without being sharp or solventy.
