Perennial’s Maman (2025) is a monumental Imperial Stout, showcasing an intricate tapestry of barrel-aged complexity. Spending over two years in a blend of Willet Rye, Brown Foreman Rye, Wild Turkey Rye, Wild Turkey Bourbon, New Riff Rye, and Heaven Hill Rye barrels, the beer radiates deep aromas of spicy rye grain, charred oak, and rich vanilla. On the palate, the inclusion of lactose provides a velvety, decadent foundation for layers of bittersweet dark chocolate, espresso, and black molasses. The extended aging integrates the 13.4% ABV into a smooth, warming glow, finishing with nuanced notes of scorched caramel, leather, and peppery rye spice.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). Renders a small, fine-beaded, deep tan head with low to moderate retention; high viscosity is evidenced by prominent legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee, and black licorice. Significant barrel character introduces spicy rye, toasted oak, and bourbon-soaked vanilla. Low esters of prune and dried fig emerge as it warms, with no perceptible hop aroma.
Taste. Initial impression is intensely rich and sweet, followed by a wave of heavy roast, cocoa, and molasses. The barrel influence is assertive, contributing notes of black pepper, clove, and caramel. Medium-high bitterness provides balance against the lactose sweetness. The finish is long and warming with lingering notes of dark fruit, scorched grain, and oak tannins.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, viscous, and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture enhanced by lactose. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, lacking any harshness.
