North Coast Brewing Company Pranqster
Pranqster is a refined Belgian Golden Strong Ale that showcases North Coast’s use of antique yeast cultures to create a sophisticated sensory experience. The pour reveals a brilliant gold hue beneath a voluminous, rocky white head. Its complex bouquet is dominated by a floral nose and a moderate-to-high intensity of pome fruit esters, particularly pear. On the palate, a soft Pilsner malt base supports a profile of peppery alcohol, herbal hop character, and a full fruity flavor. The high carbonation and lean body lead into a remarkably clean, dry finish, masking its strength with a refreshing effervescence.
Appearance. Pale yellow to deep gold (SRM 3–6) with brilliant clarity. Features a massive, long-lasting, rocky white head that leaves characteristic Belgian lacing as it slowly recedes.
Aroma. High-intensity bouquet dominated by pome fruit esters, notably pear, and floral hop notes. A subtle peppery alcohol and perfumy phenol quality is present over a nearly neutral, slightly grainy-sweet malt base.
Taste. Initial flavors of crisp pear and delicate floral hops are supported by a soft malt backbone. The mid-palate introduces peppery alcohol and a firm bitterness that is accentuated by the high attenuation. The balance is yeast-driven and hop-forward, concluding in a long, very dry, and clean finish.
Mouthfeel. Light to medium body, appearing lighter than the gravity suggests due to very high, effervescent carbonation. Features a smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth that is well-integrated and not solventy.

From co-founder Tom Allen, “The Belgians had established naming their beers with a slightly wicked reference – Duvel, Lucifer, Verboten, etc. We liked that, and so followed PranQster trading on the Belgian precedent with a light touch.” It also gives us great pleasure to allude to the Northern California history of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters which is a noted part of our regional history. The “Q” is included for uniqueness and fits the unique qualities in this ale.
BREWERS NOTES
From co-Brewmaster, Patrick Broderick, “PranQster was a fun beer to create. During the trials we brewed the beer in batches with a number of Belgian strains of yeast and sat down one day in 1995 to see which strain we liked the best. One of us poured two of the samples together and viola we had found the perfect blend of banana-like fruit and clove-like phenol character that we were looking for. It’s not an easy trick to propagate from two separate strains of yeast each time we brew the beer but the effort is well worth it. PranQster, like the originals from Belgium, is one-of-a kind!”
North Coast PranQster has won the Gold for the best Belgian Style Pale Ale at the 2014 San Diego International Beer Competition. The judging was conducted by hops and barley loving industry professionals in a blind tasting. Already a four time gold medal winner, PranQster was awarded number five.
