Muttnik Albina is a refined Specialty IPA that bridges the gap between a Belgian Witbier and a modern American IPA. By utilizing blanche yeast, the brewery achieves a spicy and ester-driven profile that aligns perfectly with vibrant, citrusy hop character. The addition of wheat and hulled oats provides a soft, enveloping body that balances a firm bitterness, ensuring the beer remains approachable. This bright profile delivers a refreshing and thirst-quenching finish, where the creamy texture of the grains supports the hop-forward intensity. It is an elegant expression of the style, focusing on high drinkability and a harmonious interplay of yeast and hops.
Appearance. Straw to deep gold (4–7 SRM). Features a dense, creamy white head with excellent retention and significant lacing. Exhibits a characteristic slight haze to moderate cloudiness due to the high protein content of the wheat and oats.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma dominated by citrus notes of grapefruit and orange peel. This is supported by moderate spicy phenols (clove, coriander-like) and fruity esters (banana, citrus) from the blanche yeast. A low bready, grainy malt sweetness from the wheat provides a clean background.
Taste. Initial impression is hop-forward and crisp. Moderate citrus hop flavors are balanced by a low bready wheat maltiness. Bitterness is medium-high to high, providing a firm backbone that is decisive but never harsh. Belgian yeast character adds light pepper and spice notes. The finish is dry and extremely refreshing with a lingering citrus aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a distinctive creaminess and smooth, enveloping texture derived from the hulled oats. Carbonation is moderate to high, enhancing the refreshing quality. Alcohol warmth is very low and well-integrated; no astringency is present.
