BREWERY INFO
Brouwerij Mort SubiteAlken-Maes was created out of the 1988 merger of two small breweries, Maes, located in Waarloos and Alken. Both had specialized in pils (Maes was producing Maes pils and Alken Cristal pils) until Maes purchased the Union brewery (based in Jumet) in 1978, which produced Grimbergen beer among others. After the merger, the group continued to purchase other breweries to expand their offer to a larger panel of beers. In 1989, the new brewery purchased a 50% stake in De Keersmaeker brewery, which specialized in spontaneous fermentation beers such as Mort Subite. In 2000, it bought Ciney and Brugs Witbier as well as the other 50% of De Keersmaeker. In the same year, the brewery was bought by British company Scottish & Newcastle, which in turn was bought by the Carlsberg/Heineken consortium in 2007. In 2002, it took over the Louwaege brewery from Kortemark (producing Louwaeges Kriek and high fermentation Hapkin). Alken-Maes has now become the number two on the Belgian market. Its headquarters are in Waarloos.

La Oude Geuze è una miscela di lambic prodotti con una percentuale di frumento non maltato tra il 30% e il 40% e invecchiati 1, 2 e 3 anni. E’ una birra acida dai tipici sentori acidi e aromi che variano dal pollaio, cuoio, terroso, caprino, fieno, cavallo e sella di cavallo. Come ogni buon lambic si consiglia di provare bottiglie dello stesso lotto in periodi o anni differenti.

Mort Subite
Mort Subite è un brand specifico le cui birre vengono prodotte ufficialmente da Brasserie De Keersmaeker, birrificio situato a Kobbegem, nel comune di Asse, nel Brabante Fiammingo. De Keersmaeker nasce nel 1869 quando Jan Fransiscus De Keersmaeker sposa Johanna Philipina Bastaerts, ereditaria del birrificio. Di padre in figlio, alla guida del birrificio si succedono Felix e Hubert. Alla morte di Hubert succedono i figli Paul e Andre e la produzione si concentra su lambic e birre ad alta fermentazione, le Gueuze Den Hert e Hert Ale.
Intorno al 70 il nome della gueuze cambia in Gueuze Mort Subite. L’attività dell’azienda si direziona nella sola produzione di lambic e nel 1985 De Keersmaeker assume il giovane birraio Bruno Reinders.
Nel 1989 metà delle quote del birrificio vengono vendute a Alken-Maes, in seguito assorbito da Heineken, mantenendo però gli standard che le competono. Il nome Mort Subite deriva dall’ultimo lancio del gioco a dadi Pietjesbak.
