An assertive and complex Oatmeal Stout, Mikkeller’s foundational brew delivers an intense sensory experience driven by gourmet coffee and a diverse grist. The interplay of Chocolate, Pale Chocolate, Brown, and Caramunich malts creates deep layers of cocoa and toffee, while Roasted Barley and Smoked malt add a dark, savory depth. Bright, resinous notes from Centennial and Cascade hops pierce through the richness, providing a balanced, firm bitterness. The inclusion of oat flakes and Pils malt ensures a velvety, creamy mouthfeel that carries the espresso-like character and delicate sweetness into a clean, lingering finish. It is a powerful, morning-inspired stout with significant depth.

Appearance. Opaque black (SRM 40+). Topped with a thick, creamy, and persistent tan-colored head with excellent lacing.

Aroma. High intensity aroma dominated by freshly roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Secondary notes of toasted oats, nutty graininess, and a subtle hint of campfire smoke. Low citrus and floral hop character from American ale yeast and hops.

Taste. Initial impression is rich gourmet coffee and dark cocoa. A complex malt backbone follows with toasted bread and light caramel sweetness. Hop bitterness is moderate to high for the style, featuring piney and citrusy edges from Centennial and Cascade. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering roasted grain and espresso-like aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a remarkably smooth, silky, and velvety texture provided by the oat flakes. Moderate carbonation with a slight, well-integrated alcohol warmth from the 7.5% ABV. No astringency despite the heavy roast.
