Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck

Kasteel Rouge is a decadent and velvety Fruit Beer, masterfully blending the robust Kasteel Donker with macerated cherries and cherry liqueur. It presents a sophisticated sensory profile where the rich, malty foundations of a Belgian Dark Strong Ale meet intense fruit character. The deep ruby-hued liquid offers a complex bouquet of ripe black cherries, dark chocolate, and caramelized sugar. On the palate, a sweet attack gives way to layers of dark fruit, almond-like pit notes, and a warming alcohol presence. Despite its indulgent profile and 8% ABV, it maintains a remarkable balance between fruit acidity and malt sweetness, finishing with a lingering, dessert-like elegance.

Appearance. Deep ruby-red to dark mahogany with brilliant clarity. Pours with a thick, creamy, light pink to tan-colored head that exhibits excellent retention and leaves fine lacing on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity of macerated cherries and cherry syrup. The malt profile is rich and complex, offering notes of caramel, toasted bread, and dark chocolate. Subtle yeast-derived esters of plum and raisin are present, alongside a soft, well-integrated alcohol warmth.

Taste. Initial impression is decidedly sweet and fruity. Dominant flavors of dark cherries and maraschino liqueur are supported by a sturdy malt backbone of brown sugar and cocoa. Hop bitterness is very low, allowing the fruit and malt to lead. The finish is long and sweet with a gentle tartness from the cherries providing necessary balance.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full body with a rich, syrupy texture. Carbonation is moderate, contributing to a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Noticeable but pleasant alcohol warmth provides a sophisticated glow without being harsh.

Brewery VanhonsebrouckIn the hands of the Bosteels family for over 200 years, the brewery relies today on the craftmanship of seven generations. In 1791, Jean-Baptist Bosteels established the brewery, and has been followed by generations who took over the brewery and never stop brewing, even during the world wars. At that time, the brewery played such an important role in the town, the family Bosteels were such influential people that we are not surprised that 3 of the 7 generations have been Town Mayors. In the year 1930’s Antoine Bosteels, 5th generation, carried on the brewing dynasty and played an important role expanding the sales of the Bosteels Pils into other regions such as Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. His son Ivo Bosteels honored the iconic beer of Pauwel Kwak by bringing it back to the market in 1980; this is the beginning of the strong beers for Brewery Bosteels. In the year 1990, Ivo’s son, Antoine Bosteels, the 7th generation, understood the potential of strong speciality beers and especially the trend for blond ones. Driven by passion of the art of brewing and guided by his creativity, Antoine is at the roots of the succes of Tripel Karmeliet and DeuS Brut des Flandres.

Amandus Vanhonsebrouck is de man bij wie het verhaal van de brouwerij begint. Naast het burgemeesterschap heeft de stichter zijn eigen boerderij met melkerij, een brouwerij en een stokerij. Na zijn plotse overlijden in 1865 neemt Emile – een van de tien kinderen – deze taken over.

Het kasteel van Ingelmunster is tot op vandaag eigendom van de familie Vanhonsebrouck. In 1989 inspireert het Luc Vanhonsebrouck om een donker speciaalbier te brouwen. Kasteel Donker, het allereerste Kasteelbier, wordt vervolgens in 1991 voorgesteld aan het grote publiek en is meteen een schot in de roos. Het merk Kasteelbier is een feit en enkele jaren later, in 1996, volgen Kasteel Blond en Kasteel Tripel.

Kasteel Brouwerij Vanhonsebrouck profileert zich meer en meer als een brouwerij die graag buiten de lijntjes kleurt. Na het succes van de Cuvée du Château waagt de brouwer zich aan het rijpen van Kasteel Tripel in gebruikte cognacvaten. De Trignac is geboren! De Indian Pale Ale kent een grote opmars en blijft aan populariteit winnen. Om een antwoord te bieden aan de IPA wordt Kasteel Hoppy geïntroduceerd met een bitterheid van 45 EBU. Toch wordt het bier geen hopbom waardoor het een echte doordrinker is.
