Hannen Alt presents a distinctive interpretation of the Altbier style, leaning into a deeper malt complexity than many of its Düsseldorf counterparts. The sensory experience is defined by a rich, bready foundation that evokes toasted hazelnuts and subtle coffee notes. Despite its dark mahogany hue, the palate remains remarkably smooth and approachable, balanced by a restrained hop presence that allows the malt to take center stage. The fermentation is exceptionally clean, leading into a crisp, highly attenuated finish that surprises with a delicate, lingering smoky character, providing a unique rustic depth to this classic amber ale.

Appearance. Deep copper to dark brown (SRM 15–18) with brilliant clarity. Pours with a thick, creamy, off-white head that demonstrates excellent retention and leaves fine lacing on the glass.

Aroma. Moderate to moderately-high malt intensity characterized by rich notes of toasted bread crusts and roasted hazelnuts. Very low coffee-like roast is present. Hop aroma is low with a faint spicy and floral quality. Fermentation profile is clean with no discernible esters or diacetyl.

Taste. Initial impression is malty and smooth, featuring flavors of toasted grain and nutty sweetness. The bitterness is low to moderate, providing just enough structure to balance the malt without being sharp. Secondary notes of light-roast coffee emerge toward the mid-palate. The finish is notably dry and clean, highlighted by a subtle, brief wisp of smoke and a lingering toasted grain aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with a smooth, well-conditioned texture. Carbonation is moderate to medium-high, lending a crispness to the dry finish. Alcohol warmth is negligible, and there is no perceptible astringency.
