Stramash is a rich, evocative Wee Heavy that celebrates Scottish indulgence through a dense malt foundation. Utilizing a heavy hand of Harroway’s jumbo porridge oats and golden naked crystal oats alongside ale malt, the beer presents a luxurious, velvety texture. Deep aromatic notes of toasted nougat and Tunnock’s Caramel wafer lead into a palate saturated with the dark fruit and spice of traditional Black Bun fruitcake. A subtle addition of roast barley provides a counterpoint to the decadent, caramelized sweetness, while a whisper of hops ensures a balanced finish. This expression captures a "Mars supper" decadence with smooth alcohol warmth and a chewy, full-bodied presence.

Appearance. Deep copper to dark mahogany with brilliant ruby highlights when held to light. Crowned by a dense, creamy tan head that shows moderate retention and leaves light lacing on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity malt-forward profile featuring rich caramel, butterscotch, and toasted breadcrumbs. Distinctive notes of dark fruit esters like raisins and plums mingle with a nutty, graham cracker quality. A faint hint of roasted grain and soft alcohol warmth are present, while hop aroma remains virtually absent.

Taste. Initial impression is deeply malty and sweet, dominated by layers of caramelized sugar and toffee. Flavors of milk chocolate, biscuit, and dark fruitcake persist through the mid-palate. Bitterness is low, serving only to prevent cloying, while the finish is medium-sweet with a lingering hint of grainy roasted barley. Complex fermentation esters suggest dried dates and figs.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally creamy, bolstered by the significant addition of oats. Carbonation is moderate, supporting a thick and chewy viscosity. A gentle, smooth alcohol warmth is present, balancing the residual malt sweetness without any harshness or astringency.

When we started out we were tiny. Garage Project wasn't even micro brewing… it was a truly nano brewery.
After nine years of working in breweries with equipment 100 times bigger it was quite a change to downsize to a fifty litre brew kit. But what we lacked in size we more than made up for in agility and the ability to experiment.
When you’re brewing on such a small scale you can afford to take risks. That suited us. We wanted to try something new.
Five years have passed and we’ve grown, but that same ethos still shapes how we do things at the Garage. Whether we’re brewing 50 litres or 2000, we’re still here to take some risks, to have a bit of fun and to try something new.
Way back in the day, when we were just starting out, we wrote a little blurb about each other to shed some light on who we are, and what lead us down the path of starting a brewery in Wellington, (if you’ve ever written your own bio, you’ll know how hard it can be!).
