Fuller’s Imperial IPA
This formidable Double IPA from Fuller’s offers a sophisticated British interpretation of a high-strength style. It features a robust foundation of crystal malt that provides a deep amber hue and toasted sweetness, perfectly balancing the assertive hop character. Utilizing a blend of Target, Goldings, and Fuggles hops added at multiple stages, the beer delivers an intense sensory profile defined by earthy, woody, and resinous pine notes. At 10.5% ABV, it carries a well-integrated alcohol warmth. A unique addition of black pepper introduces a subtle spicy twist, while bottle conditioning ensures a rich, evolving mouthfeel and a lingering, bitter-sweet finish.
Appearance. Deep copper to light amber (12-14 SRM) with a large, persistent off-white head that leaves dense lacing. Generally clear, though a light haze may be present due to bottle conditioning.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of resinous pine from Target hops and the earthy, floral, and woody scents of Goldings and Fuggles. A strong malt backbone of caramel and toasted biscuit is evident, complemented by a light spicy note of black pepper and clean, warming alcohol.
Taste. Initial impression is a balance of rich caramel malt and firm bitterness. The hop flavors are prominently earthy and herbal, lacking the citrus of American versions. Mid-palate reveals bready crystal malt depth and a distinct black pepper piquancy. It finishes medium-dry with a lingering resinous bitterness and a touch of peppery spice.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, almost creamy texture from the bottle conditioning. Carbonation is moderate. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present, without harshness or astringency.
