Floreffe Prima Melior
Floreffe Prima Melior is a sophisticated Belgian Dark Strong Ale that bridges the gap between monastic tradition and intense spice character. Pouring a near-ebony hue with a dense brown head, it leads with an exceptionally rich bouquet of anise, coriander, and liquorice. The sensory journey reveals a robust foundation of roasted malts, delivering focused notes of grilled cocoa beans and dark coffee. While the yeast provides subtle white fruit esters, the addition of sugar during bottle conditioning ensures a lively carbonation that lifts the beer's medium-full body. It concludes with a warm, complex, and slightly acidic finish that highlights lingering woody, maderised nuances.
Appearance. SRM 35-40. Very deep, almost black color; opaque. Huge, dense, persistent, moussy brown head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. A rich, complex blend of aniseed, liquorice, and roasted malt aromas. Subtle spicy coriander notes and fermentation-derived white fruit esters (pear, apple) are balanced by a soft, bready malt base. Low, spicy alcohol presence; no perceptible hop aroma.
Taste. Initial malt richness with immediate flavors of dark coffee and grilled cocoa beans. Prominent spicy notes of anise and liquorice. Bitterness is medium-low, provided by roasted grains rather than hops. Secondary fermentation character is evident in the complex, harmonized flavors. The finish is long, noticeably acidic, and increasingly woody as the beer matures, lacking any syrupy heaviness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full body with a creamy, robust texture. High carbonation from bottle conditioning provides a lively effervescence. Noticeable alcohol warmth is smooth and well-integrated. Slight acridity from roasted malts adds character without harshness.
