Effet Papillon Ciao 2021
This 2021 vintage Imperial Stout presents an intense, layered sensory profile built on a complex grist including Chocolate and Black Malt. The addition of oats creates a silky, viscous texture that carries deep flavors of bittersweet cocoa and roasted coffee. Warrior hops provide a sturdy, clean bitterness that balances the residual sweetness from the Caramel Pils, Caramel Hell, and Caramel Vienne malts. At 11% ABV, a smooth, integrated warmth emerges, complemented by subtle dark fruit esters from the AY4 fermentation. The result is a harmonious, full-bodied experience where burnt grain notes meld into a long, toasty, and slightly vinous finish.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). It features a thick, deep tan head with moderate retention that leaves oily legs on the glass, indicative of its high alcohol content and viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and heavily roasted grain. Background notes of caramel and toffee are present, alongside very low earthy hop notes and a subtle dark fruit ester profile resembling raisins or dried plums.
Taste. Initial impression is a massive wave of dark chocolate and roasted coffee. The malt flavor is complex, showcasing bread crust from Pilsen malt and deep toasted sugar from the various caramel malts. Warrior hops provide a firm, clean bitterness that cuts through the malt sweetness. The finish is long and warming with a lingering roast character and a hint of dark-grain bitterness that never becomes harsh.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture provided by the oats. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, gentle alcohol warmth is noticeable and well-integrated, providing a luxurious mouth-coating sensation without astringency.
