Brouwerij ’t IJ se ha estado gestando cervezas de calidad desde 1985. Todo comenzó cuando el músico Kasper Peterson buscó una salida oficial para su elaboración de cerveza casera experimental.
Como miembro y compositor de la banda Drukwerk, se enamoró de las cervezas de tipo belga mientras estaba de gira al sur de la frontera con Holanda. Como este tipo de cervezas no se elaboraban en Amsterdam, Kasper decidió producirlas él mismo.
