This massive Imperial Stout emerges from its whisky cask slumber with an opaque, midnight-black presence. The influence of Munich and Dark Crystal malts provides a robust backbone of bittersweet chocolate and deep caramel, while the maturation in Compass Box barrels imparts a shadowy wisp of peat smoke. Columbus and First Gold hops contribute a firm bitterness that anchors the intense roasty character, subtly accented by the spicy, floral notes of Saaz. A distinctive layer of orange oil complexity threads through the finish, brightening the dense, velvety texture and balancing the powerful warmth of this 15% ABV powerhouse.
Appearance. Jet black and fully opaque. Features a thick, creamy, dark tan head with moderate retention. High viscosity is evident by prominent legs coating the glass as it is swirled.
Aroma. High intensity. Deep aromas of roasted coffee and dark chocolate are primary. The barrel aging contributes distinct peat smoke, vanilla, and oak. Secondary notes of orange oil and dark dried fruits like raisins from the crystal malts. Hops offer a light earthy and spicy character.
Taste. Intense initial impression of roasty-burnt grain and dark cocoa. The palate is enriched by toastiness and sweet caramel. Mid-palate reveals complex whisky-derived smoke and a vibrant orange oil citrus note. Firm bitterness balances the residual malt sweetness. The finish is long, warming, and bittersweet with lingering espresso and charred oak.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied with a chewy, viscous, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present and noticeable, reflecting the high gravity without being sharp or solventy.
