BrewDog Cocoa Psycho
This decadent Russian Imperial Stout offers an immersive sensory journey through layers of mocha and dark chocolate. Built on a complex base of Extra Pale, Wheat, Cara, and Smoked malts, complemented by Black and Roasted Barley, it delivers a deeply roasty core. Infusions of cacao nibs and crushed coffee beans drive intense espresso and bittersweet cocoa notes, while vanilla pods and toasted oak chips provide a velvety, wood-etched finish. Despite the firm bitterness from Cascade, Fuggles, and Goldings hops, the character remains extravagantly smooth. It is a potent, warming experience that balances luxurious sweetness with a charred, sophisticated complexity.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a thick, well-formed, deep tan to dark brown head that shows moderate retention and leaves significant lacing. Visible viscosity is apparent in the form of slow-moving legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity, featuring a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee, and charred grain. Subtle notes of wood-smoke and toasted oak are present, alongside a sweet, creamy vanilla character. Low earthy and floral hop notes from Fuggles and Goldings complement a background of dark fruit esters resembling raisins and prunes.
Taste. Intense and complex, with an initial impression of dark chocolate and espresso. A robust malt backbone of toast and charred grain from the Roasted Barley and Black malt is balanced by a moderate to firm bitterness. Infusions of cacao and coffee beans provide a lingering bittersweet luxury, while vanilla and oak chips add a smooth, rounded dimension. The finish is long and warming with a touch of wood-tannin and smoke.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, chewy, and viscous with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is moderate-low, providing just enough lift to the heavy frame. A noticeable, smooth alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, avoiding any harshness or solvent qualities.
