This decadent Imperial Stout, a collaboration with Great Notion, presents a complex tapestry of campfire nostalgia and dark fruit. Initial waves of toasted marshmallow and honeyed graham cracker emerge from a base of deep chocolate malts, while a vibrant undercurrent of ripe blueberries adds a jammy brightness. The 14.4% alcohol is integrated through extensive maturation in bourbon barrels, contributing nuances of charred oak, spicy vanillin, and rich caramel. It is a massive, viscous liquid that balances the sweetness of a confectionary treat with the robust, roasty backbone of a traditional dark ale, finishing with a lingering, berry-infused warmth.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). A thick, creamy, deep tan head forms with moderate retention, eventually settling into a ring that leaves heavy, oily legs on the glass as it swirls.
Aroma. High intensity and layered; dominant notes of blueberry jam and sweet vanilla marshmallow are supported by rich milk chocolate, molasses, and honeyed graham cracker. Distinct bourbon barrel influence provides aromas of charred oak, caramel, and a hint of coconut. Low roasted coffee and dark fruit esters like raisin are buried under the decadent adjunct profile.
Taste. The initial impression is intensely sweet and fruit-forward, featuring lush blueberries and marshmallow fluff. This evolves into a complex mid-palate of bittersweet chocolate and toasted grain. Significant bourbon character emerges toward the finish with notes of oak tannin and spirit-forward vanilla. Bitterness is low to moderate, primarily derived from roasted malts to provide balance. The finish is long and lingering, tasting of chocolate-covered berries and oak.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and coating texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the velvety creaminess. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, lacking any harsh solvent notes.
