This aged Old Ale presents a sophisticated profile defined by eighteen months of maturation in Romanian red wine barrels from Crama Ferdi. The sensory experience is a complex tapestry of dried dark fruits and the distinct bergamot citrus of Earl Grey tea, layered over the unique cherry-almond and nutty spice of mahleb. On the palate, a luscious malt base provides notes of treacle and toffee, which are beautifully offset by the vinous tannins of black grapes and oak. The finish is long and warming, showing elegant oxidative notes of Sherry and leather, making for a deeply meditative, full-bodied experience.
Appearance. Deep mahogany with ruby highlights (18-22 SRM). Low, cream-colored head with poor retention, typical of long-term barrel conditioning. Clarity is clear but appears nearly opaque in the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Complex malt profile of molasses, toffee, and treacle. Significant vinous character from black grapes and red wine barrels, complemented by the floral bergamot of Earl Grey tea. Distinctive cherry-pit and almond notes from mahleb mix with pleasant oxidative aromas of Sherry and leather.
Taste. Initial impression is malty-sweet and rich. Deep malt complexity features flavors of toasted nuts, caramel, and dark fruit. The mid-palate reveals tart black grape skin and a subtle herbal tea bitterness. Mahleb contributes a spicy, stone-fruit depth. Bitterness is moderate but softened by age, balancing the residual sweetness. The finish is lingering and vinous with a complex, port-like oxidation.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full, chewy body with a smooth, velvety texture. Low carbonation. Noticeable alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated. Light tannic astringency from the oak barrels and tea provides structure.
